History and Geography

Our History and Geography curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and organised to support children with gaining knowledge and skills systematically and appropriate to their age.

At Fairholme, our children love History. During lessons, they spend time using key historical skills to find out about the past.

Miss Hunt is our History subject leader and is always asking children about what they think about their learning to make our curriculum even better.

Recently she spoke with some Y3 and Y4 children:

Why do you think it is important to learn about History?
Learning about what happened before helps us to understand things that happen today. We don't want to make some of the same mistakes people in the past made. Sometimes we can learn about how to make our lives better.

What would make learning about History even better? We could investigate the History that's near us or dig for artefacts.

Because of some of the feedback from the children Miss Hunt set up our amazing History detective club where children go out and literally dig up our school grounds to see what clues from the past we can find in our own 'back garden.'

October is Black History Month.....

Keep your eyes peeled on ParentHub, and in school, for details about our Black History Month competition. Last year, we had so many wonderful entries it was difficult to choose our winners.

Why not have a look at the BBC website to discover more about influential black heroes from History and to get some inspiration about someone you might want to research a bit more?!

In school, we will be learning about some of the UK's black pioneers. Year 5 will be visiting the National Archives in Kew to find about Black History month too. I wonder what your year group will be doing?
